CT298 – Print Culture – 0.5 Credit

This course takes a socio-historical perspective of print culture. Students will learn about print’s modern origins and its development from the Gutenberg press to e-books, as well as discuss theoretical issues about what constitutes text and how texts are read. Possible topics for this course include: the nature of the author, the forms in which texts are transmitted (mass culture magazines, pulp fictions, postal technologies, lending libraries), censorship, copyright, the publishing trade, the reading public, book clubs, the reception and cataloguing of books as artefacts. {CU} Prerequisites 2 100-level CT courses.
