CH332 – Biophysical Chemistry – 0.5 Credit

This course covers the main concepts and applications of thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum chemistry and spectroscopy in biological systems. After an explanation of the physical principles underlying the structure and function of cells as prototypical living units, physical chemistry of cellular processes will be discussed in some detail. The topics include macromolecular interactions and association in the cell, folding of macromolecules, biochemical reaction and regulatory networks, molecular transformations, transport processes, models of biochemical systems, and some physical techniques for structural analysis such as light scattering, biological fluorescence, X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. The pedagogical focus of this course will be on developing problem solving skills. Prerequisites MA110 (or MA101 or MA103), CH250 and CH212 (or CH214). Co-requisites CH350 recommended.
