JN423 – Journalism Project – 1.0 Credit

This full-credit course runs two terms (fall and winter). Following a detailed work schedule, students will produce an in-depth, research-based project in traditional journalism, new and emerging media, or strategic communications. Students will work individually and projects may involve video, audio, print, web-based platforms or multimedia journalism. Students will submit a project proposal that includes a survey of existing journalism work and literature focused on their selected topic. Story production will involve original, comprehensive, and detailed research, including multiple interviews. Students will be expected to present information in a compelling narrative structure involving characters/subjects and expert interviews. As a point of reference, completed broadcast projects might require 20 minutes or more of polished, edited, video; print projects might require 3,000 words or more. However, totals may vary at the discretion of the instructor especially in cases of mixed-media projects. The second option is to complete a thoroughly researched, traditional scholarly work of a theoretical nature. This research project involves conducting an extensive literature review in an area of scholarly research, and developing and defending a thesis that engages with that literature. It may also involve original research. Although a course structure will be provided, students will be responsible for working independently and consulting with instructors as needed. Prerequisites Registration in Year 4 of the Honours Journalism program
