JN208 – Researching for News – 0.5 Credit

This course introduces students to technology-assisted news reporting techniques as well as the means of critically evaluating information and sources. Topics explored will include: methods of computer-assisted reporting such as how to use spreadsheet data and analytical software in the formation of stories; how to obtain electronic and hard copy records from public agencies and other sources; and how to track down credible live sources via electronic and more traditional means. Assignments will emphasize the acquisition and evaluation of quality information and its presentation in journalistic form. Prerequisites JN101 or permission of the Journalism program co-ordinator.
