This course will address the social analysis of disasters, including issues pertaining to the perception and interpretation of "risk" and "vulnerability"; the link between emergency response-reconstruction- and development; natural and man-made disasters; and local interpretations of calamity versus scientific understandings. Case studies will illustrate the various issues. Prerequisites 1.0 credit in 200 level GS courses, or permission of the instructor. Exclusions GS340j.
